Who We Are

We transform lives as the leading social justice charity across the island of Ireland. Operating since 1978, we believe another chance can change a life. Each year we speak up for and support more than 25,000 children, young people, individuals and families. We enable them to overcome their challenges, empower positive change and support family unity.

What We Do

Our Mission Transforming Lives Transforming Society

How We Do It

Janus Programme (Janus Galway/Roscommon): Extern provides an individually-tailored support programme in response to the needs of these young people to support them to remain at home or at the lowest level within the care system. The project is aimed at improving young people’s social functioning, community inclusion and family relationships.

Programme content: While on the programme, young people will be offered a range of sessions including special interest activities, day trips and specific individual work. The programme provides a number of respite overnights to focus on independent living skills, social skills development, provision of respite and problem-solving approaches (both planned and responsive).

Janus works at the young person’s pace to build upon their personal attributes and undeveloped potential. The project operates within an interagency model of work, connecting interventions within a holistic model inclusive of school and local community supports, making the young person aware of this approach. Staff liaise closely with primary care-givers and involve them in the contract setting and also utilise the strengths of primary carers (and, where appropriate, extended carers) to build a package of support for the young person.

*Covid 19: The service has continued to operate throughout Covid-19 – face to face sessions have continued, in line with Government guidelines, where they are deemed necessary to support the young person. Virtual engagement is also provided over the phone and online.

Who We Serve

The Janus programme works intensively on a one-to-one basis with young people aged 10-17 years, who are living in the community or within the care system, and whose behaviour is challenging, posing a risk to either themselves or to others. Referrals to the programme come directly from Tusla with whom there is s strong collaborative working relationship, supporting better outcomes for young people and their families.

Choosing A Strong Password

Chains of words, make passwords easy to remember and harder to crack.

To create a password that meets our strength requirements, it’s recommended to use a mix of at least three random words along with a number (not a birthday or 123 etc., just random) and one or more symbols and capitals, but don't capitalize the first letters of the words, e.g.:

  • mower-speaK5shadow
  • table?taPe748goNe.

This password style might not be very common, and it will be much more difficult for computers/bots to crack. It also allows for your passwords to be memorized more easily. Though a password vault may help with that.
